Monday has been designated for the public to meet and discuss their issues with the Land Commissioner General and other staff officers of the Land Commissioner General’s Department, with Wednesday provided as an alternative day.
As the Department must also handle similar issues for thousands of other individuals who do not visit regularly in addition to file processing, office and field inspections, and policy decisions, the public is kindly requested not to visit on days other than Monday and Wednesday to avoid inconvenience.
The newly appointed Additional Land Commissioner General, Ms. Ishanthi Buddhini Gunawardhana, officially assumed duties today at the Land Commissioner General’s Department. She marks a historic milestone as the first-ever Additional Land Commissioner General in the Department’s history
On 22.08.2025, a field visit was conducted with the participation of relevant officials, along with public and political authorities, to verify the land rights of long-term residents within the Kahalla Pallekele Sanctuary, a vital area in the North Western Wildlife Zone. The visit focused on surveying, demarcating, and protecting the Hakwatunawa Tank Reserve, which is an important water source for wildlife, including elephants, in the Galgamuwa region. The initiative also aimed to propose lasting solutions to human-elephant conflicts by renovating ancient tanks, including the Kalamaduwa Tank in the Kalamadu Ela Reserve, and ensuring the provision of water and food for wild animals, including elephants, within the reserve itself.
The gathering included Hon. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Mr. Namal Karunaratne, Hon. Member of Parliament, Attorney-at-Law, Ms. Geetha Herath, Secretary and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Kurunegala District Secretary, Secretary to the North Western Governor, Provincial Land Commissioner, Kurunegala Irrigation Director, Polpithigama Divisional Secretary, Kurunegala District Forest Officer, District Wildlife Assistant Director, Pradeshiya Sabha members of the area, residents of the area and the Assistant Land Commissioner, Janaka D. Bandara Herath participated representing the Land Commissioner General.
A special program was successfully held on 13th and 14th August 2025 at the premises of the North Central Provincial Land Commissioner’s Department under the direction of the Land Commissioner General’s Department.
The program focused on field inspections related to unresolved land issues in the Anuradhapura District, along with the review of nearly 1,000 long-term lease files where no follow-up action had been taken. Proceedings on other relevant files were also carried out during the program.
The initiative was conducted with the active participation of the North Central Provincial Land Commissioner’s Department, the Anuradhapura Inter-Provincial Land Commissioner’s Office, and all the Divisional Secretariats of the Anuradhapura District.
On 15th August 2025, a discussion on state land management and the resolution of land issues was held under the patronage of the Deputy Minister of Lands and Irrigation and under the direction of the Anuradhapura District Secretariat.
The meeting brought together all land-related institutions, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation, the Land Commissioner General’s Department, the Land Title Settlement Department, the Department of Irrigation, the Mahaweli Authority, all Divisional Secretariats, and other relevant agencies.
A wide range of issues concerning state land duties were discussed during the session.
“Gee Rasawindana” Musical Evening Organized by the Welfare Society – 01 August 2025
Under the guidance of the Land Commissioner General, the Welfare Society of the department organized a delightful two-hour musical event, “Gee Rasawindana” showcasing the diverse talents of our officers. Participants contributed through singing, announcing, and sharing literary insights into the songs performed.
The event served as a refreshing break from the regular office routine, offering a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere that fostered camaraderie and creativity among colleagues.
With the aim of expediting the processing of Tsunami grant documents in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts of the Eastern Province, a mobile service programme was conducted from June 17 to 20, 2025, centered around the Divisional Secretariat Offices of Pottuvil, Manmunai North, and Vakarai. During this programme, approximately 375 eligible applications for Tsunami grants were collected and forwarded to the Land Commissioner General’s Department for further processing
In line with the World Environment Day commemorations, Land Commissioner General’s Department organized an awareness programme on plastic waste management on June 3, 2025. The event was held at the Mihikatha Madura premises, with the active participation of all institutions located within the premises. This initiative aimed to raise awareness on sustainable waste management practices and reduce the environmental impact of plastic usage.
In parallel with World Environment Day, a tree planting programme was successfully held on June 5, 2025, at the premises of Mihikatha Madura. The event was conducted under the patronage of the Land Commissioner General, with the objective of promoting environmental sustainability and awareness.

With the objective of providing solutions to prevailing land issues related to state lands in the Northern Province, a mobile service programme was conducted at the Office of the Provincial Land Commissioner – Northern Province on March 19th, 20th, and 21st, 2025.
During this programme, measures were taken to resolve approximately 50 identified land related issues through field inspections. Additionally, a discussion on land management in the Northern Province was held under the patronage of the Honourable Governor.
